Climate Change Adaptation and Resilient Infrastructure
October 2024
As climate change worsens, communities face increasing floods, droughts, and storms. Adaptation, backed by accurate climate data, is key to protecting lives and economies. National Meteorological and Hydrological Services provide the data needed for governments, businesses, and communities to anticipate risks and strengthen preparedness. However, there is often a disconnect between the climate scenarios looming, and preparedness. This webinar will focus on key challenges, with a particular emphasis on the African continent.
Navigating the Green Energy Transition August 2024
China is the undisputed global leader in critical minerals, which Europe and oter regions need to meet net zero targets. Yet, the environmental and social costs of mineral extraction can be high. In this webinar organised in partnership with Rainforest Foundation Norway, Gonçalo dos Reis, University of Edinburgh, presented new developments in battery technology, which may decrease the demand for critical minerals, and bring potential environmental and social services. Huichun Zhang, Responsible Critical Mineral Initiative (RCI), presented the Guidelines for Biodiversity Conservation in the Mining Industry being developed by RCI and partners and invited participants to provide comments.
Sustainable Commodities
July 2024
The international trade of agricultural and mineral commodities is key to ensure food security and mitigate climate change, but guardrails are needed to ensure sustainability and mitigate adverse effects for local communities and national economies. In this webinar, held in partnership with the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, the authors of the Policy Brief "Sustainable Commodities for Climate, Nature and People: Learning from the Past, Investing in the Future" discussed global trade under a multipolar world order and shared their recommendations as part of the T20(Think Tank 20) to governments meeting in Rio de Janeiro for the G20 Sumit in November 2024.
